Money is back, and so are the rules
KANGPENG CAPITAL · Q4 2026 private-market note
The money is still here. The rhythm has changed.
Ten judgments
- Money is still here; the rhythm has changed. Progress you can verify is worth more than a story.
- Early stage looks at science; late stage looks at orders. AI for Science is the ticket in. AI Infra is the certainty later on.
- Valuations are returning to discipline.
- Power before compute. The bottleneck is not the chip. It is power, heat and moving data.
- The AI4S heat is real. The split is over who pays and how to verify.
- Embodied AI is moving from launch events to production lines. Customers ask for 8,000 hours without failure, not for a valuation.
- The world has more than one answer besides Silicon Valley. European old money sat down in showrooms in Shenzhen and Beijing.
- Industrial capital and local state capital are now the main LPs. They only back deployment and orders.
- The great voyage of assets is over. The great voyage of products has begun. Chinese companies are no longer just investees; they deliver.
- Four tracks resonate together: AI, Frontier, Infra, Physical. On December 12, at the 1212 Sci-Tech Festival, we check the answers together.
Three actions for the quarter
- Plan the timeline backwards. Anything you want to close this year must start before the end of October.
- Signing is not funding. Closing is the finish line. The ability to close is the ability to raise.
- Research drives deals. Publish the report first, then do the deal. Put the problems on the table first, then talk about scale.

Is Silicon Valley still the only answer?
Europe Safari: four days, Shenzhen & Beijing
In September we brought a group of European family offices, industrial investors and fund-of-funds to Shenzhen and Beijing. Four days, two cities, and a lot of meals.
What we learned, in two languages
- Institutional immersion: bring global LPs to witness the alpha firsthand.
- Find the category-defining hidden gems, long before they reach global consensus.
- The opportunity is obvious; the exit is not. So: a fund of funds.
- Exclusive sourcing, and an exit strategy you can actually explain.
- Early is why we dare: when exits are unclear, entry price is the safety.
- "Why the rush to IPO?" A straight answer beats a polished one.
- Too long a preamble, too many products, and the room glazes over.
- Europe lacks technology, China lacks market. What is missing is trust.
One line we keep thinking about
"Europe is not the easiest market. But in today's geopolitics, it may be the best value." — the head of a German family office
The great voyage of assets is over. The great voyage of products has begun.
