1930年生于浙江宁波。1955年毕业于北京医学院药学系，长期在中医研究院从事中药研究。1969年出任523项目组组长，带领团队从古籍中获得灵感，1972年提取出青蒿素，为疟疾治疗带来突破，挽救了数以百万计的生命。2011年获拉斯克奖，2015年获诺贝尔生理学或医学奖，2019年获颁共和国勋章。
